Kevin Lopez Educating Others at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History

When Kevin joined New Horizons in 2014, it was challenging to get him engaged.

Kevin remained to himself until that one magical moment! “It was as if the legend of Rip Van Winkle was being replayed right here at New Horizons,” recalls Associate Director of Supported Employment Cynthia Swift-King. “During a current events discussion, we learned that Kevin is an American history aficionado. From that day on, we knew how to tap into his passion, skills, and knowledge.”

Today Kevin is a volunteer Museum Ambassador for the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History. The Museum is thrilled to have Kevin on its team, as he is so willing and very able to give a thorough explanation of each museum exhibit.

According to Kevin’s mother, Venita Lane, “Kevin has grown in ways she never dreamed for her son.” Kevin describes his position at the American History Museum as his “dream job.”
