Our Mission

To support and empower individuals with disabilities in gaining and maintaining the skills and resources needed to maximize their potential for independence and inclusion in their community both vocationally and socially.

New Horizon focuses on quality supports and services, acting as a resource for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities while ensuring excellence in advocacy and person-centered programs. With a dedicated staff, we aim to support the goals and accomplishments of our individuals and their families, establishing foundations of self-worth and fulfillment, community, and personal ability for each.

Our Story

In 1969, our founders, a group of volunteers and parents in Prince George’s County, formed New Horizons Supported Services, Inc. This dedicated group was committed to improving the lives of their family members with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When New Horizons first began, the obstacles were many and resources few. Parents had insufficient options for their children with special needs, leading our founders to seek out better alternatives for their loved ones. Their focus was on:

  • Equal opportunities for education;
  • Equal opportunities for employment and training;
  • Equal opportunities to live in the community;
  • Equal opportunities for respect and dignity.

Back then, getting this equal chance was no easy task. There were very few educational or employment opportunities. Our founders fought hard to persevere, demanding quality opportunities within the community and setting a standard of care that continues even now. New Horizon’s initial budget was a mere $694 that included thousands of volunteer hours. Our agency has since flourished, now boasting a budget of nearly $5 million.
Today, we assist nearly 700 adults with disabilities achieve independence through person-centered training and support. We work daily to be innovative in the delivery of programs while expanding our reach in Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s and Anne Arundel Counties.
